1960 VW Double Door Panel Van For Sale

Here is a model of the VW Bus you dont see very often...and even less often restored to
stock specifications. It seems the vast majority of these get customized or messed with.
Well this one never had such treatment.

The term "double door" refers to the cargo doors...there are sets on each side of the Bus
for easy access to your cargo from either side of the vehicle.

This one has an interesting history too. It was originally ordered from the factory in red.
Its first owner was the Eastman Corporation in Texas that had it converted to an Ambulance for use
on the factory grounds. It was painted white inside and out, a custom metal headliner installed
and the interior outfitted with all the ambulance gear!

It remained with the Eastman company for a very long time and was retired from service at one point
and sold to a local fellow and it spent many years just sitting.
A few years back it went to a local collector with dreams of restoration that never came true.
About a year ago it came to California and it has just now been completed restoration wise and has only test miles on it.

Its a great looking Bus, very fresh and attractive.
It is a nice restoration inside and out, not "perfect" but it has the right look to be sure!

Correct bumpers, lights and all equipment.

Body is very nice, all paint, interior, rubber, etc is new.
The original numbers matching engine was completely rebuilt and runs superb.
The brake system was completely gone through with new wheel cylinders, master cylinder,
brake shoes and hoses.

Never lowered, never wrecked.

Stock wheels are wrapped with vintage style bias ply Firestone blackwall tires.
Grey center caps with painted emblems just like it came with off the showroom floor.

The underside features the belly pans that cover the central portion of the body...these were only used on
sunroof models, and double door models as this added extra strength to the body.

The underside of this Bus has been cleaned and treated and a coat of undercoat applied
with a top coat of grey that matches the original.
The suspension has been cleaned and painted.
It is not "over the top" concours level work but it has a nice look to it.

New shocks on all four corners.

Floors are very solid.

The transmission is still a bit grungy underneath...perhaps the weakest point of detailing to the underside.

Bumpers have the splash pans in place...

Looks good!

The original "stale air" 40 horse engine has been fully rebuilt and looks great top and bottom.

Wheel houses are clean

Here is the engine compartment...very very clean.
Still 6 volt electrics, just as it should be.
The original air filter was being painted at the time of these photos and will be fitted prior to sale.

New seals and hardware.

New battery and cables.

Latches are clean

Original short 6 volt coil is a rarity.

Vacuum advance distributor.
Original German fuel pump.
Nice detailing in here.

This is the original numbers matching engine.

Fuel tank has been painted and treated.

Original body tag

Looks nice!

Fresh hardware on the doors.

Stainless lock plate on the sliding windows.
All new rubber and felts.

There is some roughness to the finish in the door jams and deep corners.
It is not perfect but it is clean.

Love the new screws though...nice detail.
New door seals as well.

The headliner in this Bus is very unique as it is made out of steel.
Normally it would be a fiber board in the cab section and nothing in the cargo area.
In this Bus it goes full length.

Original clear needle speedometer.

New rubber floor mat

Floors are excellent.

Seats are properly redone with new padding and cleanly painted frames and springs.

Painted everywhere.

The "M" code tag behind the seat shows the red color and production date of  May 2nd 1960.
Originally shipped through the port of San Francisco.

The bus is fitted with a cab divider as original.

Door panels have the proper internal pockets.

Excellent steering wheel and horn push.

Kick panels are new as well.

Seat is excellent and done in the proper vinyl with no piping as original in this model.

The cab divider glass and rubber are original VW parts...
the panel itself is new.

This is the logo on the divider wall glass.

Fresh air box has a new knob and the dome light is a clean original with a new lens.

Being a panel, a rear view mirror was not standard equipment...this one never had one fitted.

Radio block off plate on the dash.

The visor is an original...very hard part to find.

Love the cab divider.

Door panels are excellent.
Handles are the correct early grooved style.

The rear hatch from the back side...nice and clean

The whole interior in the back here has been painted in grey as original.

Black plastic handles on the cargo doors are not correct...these should be metal, but the metal ones are very hard to find.
But being in black they sure look good in the back...very utilitarian.

New hatch seal too.

Forward cargo doors have new cloth check straps in place as original.

That headliner is awesome...so smooth and there is insulation between it and the top panel that helps
keep things quiet and a bit cooler or warmer inside depending on the weather.

The cargo floor was replaced suring the restoration so it is very smooth.

The doors wide open...this is such a great feature!

You can throw a frisbee through the doors to your buddy on the other side!

Nice...plain and simple too.
Do what you like back here...a clean slate.

The grey interior really contrasts nicely with the red exterior...good looking Bus!

New mirror and clamp

Bullet turn signals with new seals and lenses.

Nose is excellent.

"Ice pick" door handles.

Forward cargo door hinges have the very rare hinge covers in place!!

You sure dont see these very often!
I believe this was 60-61 only.

Body is nice and straight down the sides.

The tires are perfect.

Gotta love it...just as it was intended...no lowering or modifications...stock stock stock.

Glass taillights are proper for the year...last year for this style light was 1961.

The California yellow "commercial" plates are not being sold with the vehicle.
(but can be negotiated for seperately)
The vehicle has a clean Texas title.

All new seals and felts on the windows.
Glass is all original except for the windshields which are new.

The VW emblem on the nose is excellent.

Wiper arms and blades are new as is the hardware on the bases and gaskets too.

Headlights are very clean originals

Nice

Really a pretty Bus.

In closing this is a nice example.
It is not flawless but it is many miles nicer than the wide majority of them out there.
Look around... totally stock and proper examples like this are very few and far between!
This one is all fresh and it just looks great. Plus being the desirable double door model really puts it ahead of the pack.
Fantastic vehicle for marketing a business or just to cruise to the shows.
